The widely promoted free Wi-Fi service at Lahore Railway Station has been suspended after railway authorities reportedly failed to settle payments with the internet service provider, leaving commuters frustrated.
Passengers arriving at the station continued scanning QR codes displayed across platforms and entrances in hopes of connecting, only to find the service inactive. Many expressed anger, calling the situation a “mockery” and questioning why the facility was advertised despite unresolved payment issues.
Sources indicated that the private company supplying the internet stopped the service after unpaid bills accumulated, and its Wi-Fi equipment has been removed from the station.
The initiative was launched under the directives of Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi and aimed to provide internet access at major stations, including Lahore and Karachi, to benefit travelers. Equipment had been installed at the main entrance and on platforms two and four at Lahore Station. Now, the devices have been dismantled, leaving empty fixtures while signage advertising “Free Wi-Fi” remains.
Passengers reported confusion and frustration when scanning QR codes only to find the system non-functional. “It’s embarrassing. First trains are delayed, and now even the promised Wi-Fi is unavailable,” said commuter Rahat Babar. Another traveler, Mian Rashid, criticized the authorities, saying passengers already pay high ticket prices but receive little in return, adding to their inconvenience.
