Lahore Plans Artificial Rain, School Holidays to Combat Smog

The Punjab government is set to implement artificial rain as a measure to tackle the escalating smog crisis in Lahore, which has recently been named the world’s most polluted city.

Preparations for this initiative are currently in progress, with experts being consulted to ensure its effectiveness in reducing air pollution. Additionally, there are proposals to temporarily close schools due to the heightened health risks posed to children by the deteriorating air quality.

A budget of Rs350 million has been allocated by the Finance Ministry for the artificial rain project, which will be carried out by the departments of environment and meteorology.

Lahore, with a population exceeding 14 million, continues to face significant air pollution issues, consistently ranking among the globe’s most polluted cities. The city’s average smog level is recorded at 409, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 593 in Burki Road, 451 in DHA, and 416 in Thokar Niaz Beg.
