In recent weeks, several metre-long sections of fencing and decorative fixtures along the Lahore Metro Bus corridor have been stolen. The thefts have occurred in broad daylight and in some of the busiest areas of the city.
Key locations such as Ferozepur Road, Chauburji, Jain Mandir, and Qurtaba Chowk have been among the worst hit. Flower pots, metal fences, and other decorative items have gone missing, with damages estimated in crores of rupees.
According to local reports, drug addicts are allegedly responsible for these thefts. Many are seen loitering around the metro stations. With limited security in place, they have been able to strip the infrastructure for scrap.
At several points along the corridor, entire metre-wide gaps in fencing are now clearly visible. These gaps pose serious risks to pedestrians and traffic, especially during rush hours.
The Lahore Metro Bus Service, launched in 2013, was once a model public transport project. However, maintenance and monitoring have declined over the years, leading to increased neglect and vandalism.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan acknowledged the issue in a recent statement. “We are aware of the problem and have directed departments to take immediate action,” he said.
He added that security will be increased across the entire bus corridor. More CCTV cameras will be installed, and police patrols will be coordinated with local civic bodies. Authorities are also working to monitor and reduce the presence of drug addicts near metro stations.
The government aims to restore the damaged infrastructure and prevent future incidents through better enforcement and surveillance.
