In a significant ruling, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has mandated the closure of all educational institutions every Saturday until the conclusion of January 2024. This decision was reached during the hearing of a case addressing the alarming levels of smog in the province, with a particular focus on Lahore.
Justice Shahid Karim of LHC, in the written order, instructed the relevant authorities to issue a notification to this effect. Upon the issuance of the notification, students in universities, colleges, and schools will enjoy an additional day off.

Additionally, the order highlighted the Punjab government’s endeavors to facilitate a two-day-a-week work-from-home arrangement. The suspension of the provincial government’s directive to close gyms, issued under coronavirus-related provisions, was also emphasized, as these provisions are no longer applicable.
Furthermore, the environment department has been directed to take departmental action against its officers who failed to effectively address the issue of smog.
Earlier, the provincial government had mandated the wearing of face masks for a week in selected districts, with the order set to remain in effect from November 20 until November 26.
