Lahore authorities have finalized a comprehensive security plan for Basant 2026, dividing the city into Red, Yellow, and Green zones to manage safety risks linked to kite flying.
The detailed security strategy was submitted to the Lahore High Court (LHC) in response to a petition by Advocate Azhar Siddique. The petition challenged the Punjab Kite Flying Act and the government’s notification allowing Basant celebrations.
Police developed the plan after reviewing ten years of Basant-related data. Authorities aim to prevent accidents and enforce the Punjab Kite Flying Act strictly. Only registered kites and cotton strings will be permitted, while glass-coated, chemical, and metal strings will remain banned.
To ensure traceability, every kite and string will be registered with QR codes. Monitoring will include drones, social media surveillance, and dedicated control rooms operating 24/7 during Basant 2026.
The security plan also targets unsafe behaviors. Rooftop drinking, aerial firing, and other illegal activities will face strict penalties. Motorcyclists must wear helmets and safety wires, and entry into Red Zones will be restricted without protective antennas.
Authorities have also arranged for public convenience. Around 5,000 free rickshaws will operate across Lahore during the festivities. Rescue teams, health departments, and traffic police will remain on high alert to respond quickly to emergencies.
Officials said the measures aim to let residents celebrate Basant 2026 safely while minimizing risks. The plan combines lessons learned from previous years with modern monitoring and safety techniques.
