In response to international outcry, Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs disclosed the underlying causes of the violence involving foreign nationals and provided a detailed timeline of events leading to unrest in Bishkek from May 17 to 18.
The turmoil commenced around 2:00 am on May 13 when an altercation broke out between a group of unidentified individuals and foreign students near a pizzeria in Bishkek. The conflict ensued over a dispute regarding cigarettes, with one individual attempting to instigate a fight, prompting the foreign students to seek refuge in a hostel on Ogonbaev Street.

The situation escalated when the group pursued the students to the hostel, forcibly entering the building and robbing the foreigners of their money and belongings. Matters worsened when four individuals broke into a girls’ room, leading to a confrontation between the foreign students and the intruders.
The ensuing altercation was captured by security cameras, prompting an investigation by the ministry into the group’s unruly behavior. Four foreign nationals were arrested as part of the criminal investigation, with three reporting thefts.
The report revealed that the situation was exploited by third parties to incite further unrest through the dissemination of false information about victims and fatalities via social media channels.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
