The KPK Wildlife Department has announced the 2026 crane capture season. The department has also introduced strict rules for hunters and camp operators.
The season will continue from September 1 to October 15. Authorities have also placed a limit on the number of camps operating across the province.
Under the new rules, only 100 camps will be allowed across different KPK districts. Each authorized camp can capture up to 15 cranes during the season.
The department has limited the permitted capture to two crane species. These include Common Cranes and Demoiselle Cranes.
Hunters are not allowed to capture or hunt other bird species. Authorities have also identified areas where crane hunting is completely prohibited.
The banned areas include the Kurram River and designated wildlife refuges. These refuges are located in Lakki Marwat and Zarmilan.
Only residents from authorized districts can apply for crane capture permits. The requirement is intended to control participation in the seasonal activity.
The KPK Wildlife Department has also restricted the methods used for capturing cranes. Only traditional methods will be permitted under the notification.
Electronic devices cannot be used for crane capture. Firearms and nets are also prohibited under the new regulations.
Authorities have introduced specific transportation timings for captured cranes. Movement of captured cranes will be allowed between 6 a.m. and midnight.
Transportation will not be permitted between midnight and 6 a.m. Camp operators must follow these timings during the season.
The rules also include requirements for camp operators after the season ends. Operators must dismantle their camps once the capture period concludes.
They must also register all cranes captured during the authorized season. This requirement will help authorities monitor captured birds.
The department has fixed the camp permit fee at Rs. 15,000. An annual ownership fee of Rs. 400 will also apply per bird.
Commercial use of captured cranes has been prohibited. Authorities have warned that violators will face strict action.
Violations can result in cancellation of the relevant license. Offenders can also be placed on a five-year blacklist.
The department will also take action against camp leaders involved in illegal hunting. Authorities have emphasized compliance with the seasonal regulations.
