The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has unveiled a locally manufactured electric rickshaw as part of its broader strategy to promote environmentally friendly and affordable transport across the province. Officials described the initiative as a major step toward reducing air pollution and cutting reliance on expensive imported fuel.
The electric rickshaw was introduced during a formal ceremony attended by senior provincial ministers, transport department officials, engineers, and representatives from the local manufacturing sector. The government said the project reflects its commitment to adopting modern solutions for urban mobility while supporting domestic industry.
According to officials, the rickshaw has been designed and assembled using locally produced components to keep production costs low. Authorities said this approach will make the vehicle affordable for drivers, especially those who rely on rickshaws as their primary source of income.
The electric rickshaw operates on rechargeable batteries and produces zero tailpipe emissions, making it significantly cleaner than traditional petrol-powered vehicles. Officials noted that transport emissions are a major contributor to urban air pollution in KP’s major cities.
The provincial government also highlighted the economic impact of the initiative, saying local manufacturing would generate employment opportunities for technicians, mechanics, and small-scale vendors. Training programs are expected to be launched to develop skills related to electric vehicle maintenance.
Authorities said the government is considering incentives and easy financing schemes to encourage rickshaw drivers to shift to electric vehicles. Plans are also underway to gradually expand charging infrastructure to support the growing adoption of electric transport across the province.
