The KP Government has begun formal consultations to restore student unions in higher education institutions across the province. This initiative aims to provide students with opportunities to engage in democratic processes.
The move was discussed during a meeting chaired by Mina Khan Afridi, the Minister for Higher Education and Local Government. Officials from the Higher Education Department and leaders of student organizations reviewed proposals for reviving student unions.
Representatives from major student groups, including Islami Jamiat Talaba, Insaf Students Federation, Peoples Students Federation, and Pakhtunkhwa Students Organization, shared their recommendations during the session.
A committee was formed to finalize the framework for restoration. The committee will be led by Musharraf Afridi, provincial president of the Insaf Students Federation. It will include officials from the Higher Education Department and leaders of various student groups.
The committee has been tasked with completing its recommendations within 15 days. These proposals will then be presented in a follow-up meeting chaired by the higher education minister. The goal is to develop a practical and consensus-based framework for the restoration of student unions.
Addressing the meeting, Mina Khan Afridi said the KP Government is committed to restoring student unions at the earliest possible time. He highlighted that student unions are essential for developing capable and democratic leadership at both provincial and national levels.
The minister added that reviving student unions would help counter dynastic politics, feudal mindsets, and the dominance of privileged groups. He also noted that this move would provide youth with meaningful opportunities to participate in democratic processes.
