The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has imposed a 60-day ban under Section 144 on illegal mining and placer gold extraction along the Indus and Kabul rivers in several districts of the province. The decision was taken due to growing concerns over environmental damage, security risks, and unlawful extraction activities in riverine areas.
According to an official notification issued by the Home and Tribal Affairs Department, the ban applies to districts including Swabi, Nowshera, Kohat, and Karak, as well as surrounding areas. The order was approved after detailed reports from relevant departments and consultations held during the 37th meeting of the provincial cabinet. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Ikramullah Khan issued the directive following the government’s review of the situation.
Authorities stated that illegal mining along riverbanks has caused serious environmental degradation, water pollution, and destruction of natural landscapes. These activities also pose health and safety risks to local communities living near the affected areas. Officials further expressed concern that such operations could lead to law and order problems, disputes among local groups, and illegal transportation of extracted material. The use of fuel for excavation purposes and its potential smuggling was also highlighted as a major issue.
Government officials warned that organized groups involved in illegal mining may resist enforcement efforts, creating risks for civilians and law enforcement personnel. To address the problem, the provincial cabinet directed the Mines and Minerals Department to launch coordinated operations with district administrations and police.
Under the order, authorities have been granted full powers to seize machinery, vehicles, and equipment used in violations. Strict legal action will be taken against individuals or groups found violating the ban under relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code.
