Khunjerab Pass Opens for Year-Round Trade Between Pakistan, China, and Central Asia

Khunjerab Pass Now Operational for Year-Round Trade Between Pakistan, China, and Central Asian Republics

The Khunjerab Pass has officially been made operational for round-the-year trade between Pakistan, China, and the Central Asian Republics (CARs). This is a landmark achievement, marking the first time in 77 years of Pakistan’s independence that the pass will facilitate uninterrupted trade year-round.

The Khunjerab Pass, a crucial trade route connecting Gilgit-Baltistan with China, is a central part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative. This route is pivotal for enhancing trade and connectivity between China, Pakistan, and CARs.

The pass facilitates the movement of various goods, including machinery, textiles, electronics, and food products, contributing to the economic growth of neighboring nations. Pakistan has used the route to export industrial and agricultural products to countries like Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan.

For years, the pass was only open from April to November due to severe winter conditions and heavy snowfall, limiting trade to seven months per year. To resolve this, in a Joint Statement at the Third Belt and Road Forum in 2023, Pakistan and China committed to operating the pass year-round by enhancing infrastructure and improving passage conditions.

In support of this development, the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) has made significant upgrades, including the installation of a central heating system and other facilities at Sost Dry Port. These efforts are designed to ensure smooth trade operations throughout the year, boosting imports, exports, and transit trade from Pakistan.

This development is set to further strengthen economic ties between China and Pakistan and significantly boost regional trade and economic integration.
