Karachi Storm Kills 11 in Mawach Goth amid Strong Winds

Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, faced a chaotic night after a powerful storm caused widespread destruction, with the death toll in Mawach Goth rising to 11, according to rescue officials.Authorities confirmed that all victims were drug users, and their bodies were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi for legal procedures. Officials are still assessing the full impact of the disaster.

The tragedy followed intense rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds that struck the city on Wednesday, disrupting daily life. Major roads were severely congested, electricity outages affected large areas, and residents struggled to cope with hazardous conditions.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, similar weather conditions are expected to continue. Several districts across Sindh, including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, and Tharparkar, are likely to experience rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, with chances of isolated hailstorms.

Earlier reports had indicated one death and eight injuries after a wall collapsed in Mawach Goth, but the situation worsened as the number of fatalities increased significantly. The storm also caused injuries in other parts of the city. In Clifton, five people were hurt when a tree was uprooted by strong winds and fell on them.

Multiple areas, including Saddar, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and Shahrah-e-Faisal, were heavily affected. Flooded streets, strong gusts, and widespread power outages created an emergency-like situation across the city.

The weather department has warned that the system remains active, with more thunderstorms expected in the coming days. Light rain is also likely on the first day of Eid, while another weather system between March 24 and 27 could bring further showers.Authorities have advised citizens to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and take precautions, especially in vulnerable areas, as unstable weather conditions persist.
