Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza Resigned from Lahore High Court

Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza of the Lahore High Court has resigned, coming just two days after the resignations of senior Supreme Court judges Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah.

His resignation follows the recent approval of the 27th constitutional amendment. As a member of the high court’s administrative committee, Justice Mirza submitted his resignation to President Asif Ali Zardari and vacated his chamber.

Speculation regarding a possible transfer after the constitutional changes may have influenced his decision to step down.

Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza was appointed as an additional judge of the Lahore High Court on March 22, 2014, and was scheduled to retire in 2028. He is the son of former Supreme Court judge Justice Zia Mahmood Mirza.

Earlier this year, in January, a reference had been filed against him by a government lawyer with the Supreme Judicial Council
