Justice Muhammad Karim Khan Agha took oath as a judge of the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) on Saturday, administered by Chief Justice Amin Uddin Khan in Islamabad.
The ceremony included top FCC and Islamabad High Court judges, though some notable absences drew attention. Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza of the Lahore High Court resigned just two days after Supreme Court judges Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah stepped down, amid concerns over the recently approved 27th constitutional amendment.
Speculation suggests that anticipated transfers and other changes under the amendment influenced Mirza’s resignation, reflecting growing unease within Pakistan’s judiciary. The earlier resignations of Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah sent shockwaves through legal circles, with Mansoor Ali Shah’s seven-page resignation strongly criticizing the 27th Amendment as a “severe attack on the Constitution” and highlighting threats to justice for ordinary citizens.
