[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]Islamabad: In order to fill the two vacancies on the Supreme Court, the senior puisne judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Qazi Faez Isa, has recommended the names of the chief justices of Sindh and Peshawar high courts to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
Justice Isa named SHC CJ Ahmed Ali M. Shaikh and PHC CJ Musarrat Hilali for elevation to the Supreme Court in a letter sent to all nine members of the JCP on Monday.
The Supreme Court is currently operating with 15 judges, including Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, as opposed to the sanctioned strength of 17.

The senior judge also requested an immediate meeting of the JCP, which last met in October 2022 when three judges were elevated to the apex court.
It is worth noting that the previous meeting ended in a stalemate over ignoring the seniority principle when selecting names for elevation to the Supreme Court.
The names of judges are forwarded to the parliamentary committee following the JCP’s recommendation, and after approval, the names are sent to the president for final approval.
Previously, in 2021, the JCP, led by former CJP Gulzar Ahmed, proposed CJ SHC Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh as an ad hoc judge of the Supreme Court. Justice Sheikh, on the other hand, had refused to be elevated as an ad hoc judge.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
