Joe Biden attributes his poor performance in the debate with Trump to jet lag

U.S. President Joe Biden today attributed his poor debate performance against Republican rival Donald Trump to jet lag from his recent international travels. Speaking at a fundraiser, Biden remarked, “It’s not an excuse, but an explanation.” He admitted that it was unwise to travel extensively just before the debate, saying, “I wasn’t very smart for traveling around the world a couple times… shortly before the debate. I didn’t listen to my staff. And then I almost fell asleep on stage.”

Over a 14-day period, Biden had traveled to France, returned to the United States, then went to Italy, among other locations. He had only a few days to rest at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, before the debate. Observers noted that he seemed exhausted during this time. During the debate, Biden, who is known for his gaffes, appeared to struggle while responding to Trump’s accusations. Trump aggressively criticized Biden’s handling of the economy and international affairs. Although Biden attempted to rebut, his delivery was hesitant, and he frequently stumbled over his words.

This debate marked the first time in history that a sitting president and a former president faced off in such a setting, with both accusing each other of being the worst in history. Biden’s faltering performance has led to calls from some Democrats for him to reconsider his bid for a second term, prompting introspection within the party. Biden’s explanation for his performance has raised questions about whether the 81-year-old president is capable of maintaining a rigorous travel and work schedule. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre acknowledged that the debate was “a bad night” but expressed confidence in Biden’s resilience, saying he “knows how to come back” from setbacks.

In defense of Biden, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that people worldwide judge Biden by his overall accomplishments since taking office, not just one debate performance. He asserted that global audiences appreciate Biden’s policies and achievements.
