The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is set to construct two new dams in Islamabad aimed at addressing the water shortage issue affecting the residents of the federal capital.

The CDA Board has given the green light for the engagement of a consulting firm tasked with conducting a feasibility study and delivering a report evaluating the practicality of the proposed dam projects. The Water Wing of CDA has already outlined the terms of reference (ToRs) for this purpose.

Upon receiving the Chairman’s approval, the civic authority will solicit bids under Section 42F of the PPRA rules. However, it’s important to note that only government consulting firms, such as NESPAK and Army engineering institutions, will be eligible to participate in the bidding process.

The two proposed new dams in Islamabad are the Chiniot Dam, which will be situated upstream of the Simly Dam, and the Shahdara Dam. The Simly Dam has experienced a significant 33% reduction in its storage capacity over time and currently holds 6,881 million gallons of water.

The Chiniot Dam is expected to have a water storage capacity ranging from 18 to 20 million gallons, while the Shahdara Dam is planned to store 6 million gallons of water. The urban areas of Islamabad presently receive 80 million gallons of water daily, which falls short of the required 125 million gallons.

This supply diminishes further when the water levels in the Simly Dam and Khanpur Dam decrease. Currently, the Simly Dam supplies 28 million gallons of water, increasing to 32 million when it’s at full capacity.

Furthermore, the Khanpur Dam supplies 9 to 9.5 million gallons of water, while 30 million gallons of water are provided by tube wells, and the Rawal Dam contributes 2 million gallons. Additionally, the combined water supply from Shahdara, Saidpur, and Noorpur amounts to five million gallons of water.

Here are the list of Dams in Islamabad:

Name Location/Nearest City Height
Rawal Dam Islamabad Capital Territory 40.7 m (133.5 ft)
Simly Dam Islamabad Capital Territory 89.7 m
Sandaymar Dam Islamabad Capital Territory 14.6 m (47.9 ft)
