After shutting down brick kilns to combat air pollution, Islamabad authorities have turned their focus to smoke-emitting vehicles as the next step in improving air quality.

Under this initiative, free vehicle emission testing is being offered at three locations across the capital until August 31. Starting September 1, vehicles producing visible smoke will face hefty fines if found entering the city.

The campaign aims to promote cleaner air and encourage eco-friendly practices. Many residents have welcomed the move and are urging authorities to add more testing centers to reduce long wait times.

Free emission tests are currently available at Old Parade Ground, F-9 Park, and the Excise Office. The program, which began on July 15, exempts vehicles manufactured in 2021 or later from the initial inspection phase.

Both private and commercial vehicles are being tested using internationally certified equipment. Vehicles that meet the required standards are issued a barcode sticker as proof of compliance.

In the campaign’s first two weeks, 2,778 vehicles were tested, with 2,665 passing. After August 31, the free testing will end, and non-compliant vehicles will be banned from entering Islamabad, with strict penalties for violators.
