Imran Khan extends a conditional apology for the May 9 unrest

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan offered a conditional apology on Wednesday for the events of May 9. During a media address after a hearing of the £190 million reference in Adiala Jail, Khan called for a thorough investigation, urging the release of CCTV footage to identify those involved.

Khan emphasized that if any PTI members are found responsible, he will take strict action, including expelling them from the party and ensuring they face appropriate punishment. He stated, “The CCTV footage of May 9 should be released first. I will expel them from the party and punish them.”

Drawing a comparison to the 1971 Bangladesh conflict, Khan remarked that the military in Bangladesh supported its people by refusing to fire on them, suggesting that the military should similarly prioritize the welfare of its citizens.

In a previous interview with Reuters on August 4, Khan highlighted the importance of maintaining good relations with the military, describing it as “foolish” not to do so. Responding to questions from Adiala Jail, where he marked one year of imprisonment on August 5, Khan reiterated the necessity of strengthening ties with the military, citing Pakistan’s strategic position and the military’s significant role in the country’s private sector.

While Khan expressed no personal grievances against the United States, he maintained that the US played a role in his ousting through a no-confidence vote in 2022. He stated, “Given Pakistan’s strategic position and the significant role of the military, promoting better relations is not just wise but necessary.”
