Karachi Hit by Torrential Rains, Leading to Flooded Streets and Power Outages

Torrential monsoon rains battered Karachi on Tuesday, triggering urban flooding, traffic gridlocks, and widespread power outages across the city.

Dark clouds gathered by afternoon before heavy downpours, accompanied by strong winds, lashed areas including Surjani Town, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal B Area, Malir, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Shahrah-e-Faisal, and Nazimabad. Rainwater inundated major arteries and residential streets, with Gulshan-e-Hadeed worst hit as floodwater entered homes, forcing families to safeguard belongings.

Key intersections like Hasan Square, Nipa Chowrangi, Liaquatabad, Korangi, and Jail Chowrangi saw severe waterlogging that brought traffic to a standstill. At the Sindh Secretariat, a parking shed collapsed after a tree fell, injuring a health department employee.

Traffic police reported heavy congestion across South, East, Central, West, Malir, and Korangi districts. Stalled vehicles, ongoing development work, and flooding worsened the situation, while breakdowns on Jam Sadiq Bridge and Shahrah-e-Faisal slowed movement further. Authorities urged commuters to limit travel and use helpline 1915 for route guidance.

Karachi’s fragile power system also collapsed as over 600 feeders tripped, plunging vast areas into darkness. K-Electric blamed waterlogged substations and underground cable faults for delays in restoration. Outages hit Defence, Korangi, Orangi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Baldia, North Karachi, and many other neighborhoods.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed departments to remain on high alert, monitor drains, and ensure quick disposal of rainwater. He advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, stay clear of electricity poles, and follow safety measures during the ongoing monsoon spell.
