Heavy Rains End Dry Spell Across Pakistan, Easing Drought Fears

The prolonged risk of drought has eased as widespread rainfall has soaked various regions across the country, providing much-needed relief to both the environment and the agricultural sector.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted that the rain may persist for another two days.

Several regions, including the federal capital, experienced showers, resulting in pleasant weather. Light to heavy rainfall was recorded in multiple cities across Punjab, such as Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujar Khan, Vehari, and Mailsi.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the rain brought a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly in Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, and Dir. The hill stations of Nathiagali and Ayubia received snowfall, leading to road closures, including the Abbottabad-Murree Road and routes to Galiyat.

Meanwhile, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) also saw rain and snowfall, covering Neelum Valley, Leepa Valley, Jagran, Shuntar, Garhas, and Keel in white. The snowfall disrupted transportation, rendering key roads in upper regions impassable.

Several districts of Balochistan, including Kalat, Sohbatpur, Chaman, Daki, Sibi, Kohlu, and Qila Abdullah, also received rain. Additionally, Qila Saifullah and Ziarat witnessed light snowfall, intensifying the cold.

Positive Impact on Agriculture

Agricultural experts have described the rainfall as highly beneficial for winter crops. In Bhakkar, an area previously affected by drought, farmers are hopeful for an improved yield of rain-fed crops, particularly gram. Similarly, in Pind Dadan Khan, Burewala, and Sarai Mughal, the rain is expected to enhance wheat production.

Experts also highlighted that the rain would help restore soil moisture, leading to healthier crop yields. Additionally, it is anticipated to reduce seasonal illnesses such as colds and flu.

Power Outages and Disruptions

Despite its benefits, the heavy downpour also led to power disruptions in several areas. Residents of Bachiana faced power outages lasting up to eight hours, while Rajana and its surrounding areas experienced electricity supply issues due to feeder tripping.

Temporary blackouts were also reported in parts of the country, with Islamabad and Rawalpindi experiencing thunderstorms that caused sporadic power failures.

Forecast for More Rain

According to the PMD, the current wet spell is expected to continue for another 48 hours, bringing more rain and thunderstorms to Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and northern areas.

The first winter rain in Swabi has replenished soil moisture, reducing concerns about dry conditions for the upcoming planting season. The rainfall is also expected to contribute to increasing the water levels in reservoirs across the country.

While the rains have alleviated drought concerns, authorities have advised caution in snow-covered areas due to slippery roads and potential travel disruptions. Residents in affected regions have been urged to take necessary precautions as the wet spell continues.
