Heavy Rains Cause Urban Flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi; Emergency Declared

Torrential rainfall lashed Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Wednesday, turning streets into waterways and prompting authorities to declare an emergency in the garrison city. Bokra recorded the highest rainfall at 66 millimeters, while other areas, including Blue Area, Bari Imam, Bhara Kahu, Zero Point, and Faizabad, experienced intense downpours.

The persistent rain led to severe urban flooding in low-lying areas, where vehicles and motorcycles were left stranded in pools of rainwater. Authorities reported over 80 millimeters of rainfall in the twin cities so far, according to WASA’s Managing Director. Despite the deluge, the water level in Nullah Lai remains under control.

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued intermittent rainfall throughout the day in the region. It also predicted partly cloudy skies with chances of rain in southern Punjab, while hot and humid conditions will dominate central and northern parts of the province.

Rain is expected in several districts across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat, Kohistan, Peshawar, and Dera Ismail Khan, while Sindh will mostly experience humid weather with scattered showers in Tharparkar, Umerkot, and Mirpurkhas. In Balochistan, hot and dry conditions will prevail, though rain is likely in Zhob, Barkhan, and Khuzdar.
