Heavy rains hit Dera Ismail Khan on Sunday, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 60. Strong winds toppled electricity lines, flooded low areas, and caused roofs to collapse in many neighborhoods.
Rescue teams reported that heavy rains uprooted trees and damaged power transmission lines, leaving large parts of the city without electricity. Several homes were destroyed, forcing residents to cope without basic services.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government confirmed the casualties. Spokesperson Faraz Mughal said Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur ordered emergency services to remain alert and hospitals to prepare for more patients.
Heavy rains also affected Islamabad and Rawalpindi, causing flash floods in Bhara Kahu. Water entered homes and shops, while vehicles were stuck on flooded roads. Authorities opened spillways at Rawal Dam to release excess water and prevent further flooding.
Due to safety concerns, hiking trails in Margalla Hills were closed. The heavy rains increased the risk of landslides and flash floods in the area.
The monsoon rains were not limited to these cities. Heavy rains fell across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir. In Mardan, a roof collapse caused one death and injured two others. In Gilgit-Baltistan, schools near rivers closed as a precaution.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) warned that heavy rains will continue across Pakistan until August 30. Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and take safety measures.
The government is closely monitoring the situation. Rescue and power restoration teams are working to help affected residents. Officials urge citizens to stay alert and follow safety guidelines during this period of heavy rains.
