Smog Emergency: Health Ministry Issues Urgent Advisory

Pakistan’s Health Ministry has issued a fresh warning as smog levels continue rising in major cities, posing serious health risks for millions of people. Officials say the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous, especially for children, the elderly, and those with asthma or heart issues.

According to the advisory, citizens are urged to limit outdoor activities during peak smog hours. The ministry also advised wearing proper masks, keeping windows closed during early morning and late evening, and using air purifiers where possible. Doctors recommend drinking more water and seeking medical help if symptoms like coughing, breathing difficulty, or burning eyes appear.

Hospitals across major cities, including Lahore and Faisalabad, have reported a noticeable increase in respiratory complaints in recent days. Medical experts warn that prolonged exposure to toxic air can worsen chronic health problems and lead to long-term complications if preventive steps are ignored.

Environmental authorities say the smog spike is linked to vehicle emissions, industrial smoke, and seasonal weather patterns trapping pollutants near the ground. They emphasized that stricter enforcement of environmental laws is needed to reduce air pollution and protect public health.

Schools and workplaces have also been advised to monitor air quality and take precautionary measures for students and staff. Some districts are considering temporary restrictions on outdoor sports and unnecessary travel until conditions improve.

The ministry stressed that public cooperation is essential to minimize health risks, urging citizens to stay alert, follow safety guidelines, and prioritize their well-being as air pollution continues to rise across the region.
