Pakistan observes Hangor Day 2025 to commemorate the remarkable achievements of its submarine PNS/M Hangor during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. This annual observance celebrates a defining moment in Pakistan Navy history when Hangor sank the Indian Navy frigate INS Khukri and severely damaged INS Kirpan.
The event is celebrated on December 9 each year as a tribute to the courage, skill, and dedication of the Hangor crew. The action is particularly notable as it remains the first and only successful kill by a conventional submarine since World War II, making it a landmark in naval warfare history.
Ceremony Marks 53 Years of Valor
The Pakistan Navy held a formal ceremony at the Navy War College, Lahore, attended by serving and retired officers, civilians, faculty, and students from Bahria College.
Former Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Abdul Aziz Mirza (Retd) was the chief guest. Vice Admiral Ahmed Tasnim (Retd), who commanded Hangor during the 1971 operation, paid tribute to the crew’s bravery and highlighted the submarine’s strategic importance.
“The Hangor operation demonstrates extraordinary leadership, teamwork, and dedication. Its legacy continues to inspire Pakistan Navy personnel today,” he remarked.

Hangor Submarine: A Symbol of Naval Brilliance
Commissioned in 1969, the Hangor was the first of the Daphne Class submarines acquired from France. Its successful mission during the 1971 war was a decisive tactical and strategic achievement. The sinking of INS Khukri and crippling of INS Kirpan effectively halted Indian naval advances on Pakistan’s western front.
In recognition of their valor, the Hangor crew received four Sitara-e-Jurat, six Tamgha-e-Jurat, and sixteen Imtiazi Asnaad. Their legacy continues with the introduction of Hangor-class submarines, jointly manufactured by Pakistan and China, as part of Pakistan Navy’s modernization program.
Strategic Significance Today
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf emphasized that the induction of eight Hangor-class submarines will enhance the operational flexibility of the Pakistan Navy. He described the achievements of Hangor as a demonstration of Pakistan Navy’s resolve to defend maritime frontiers and uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
“Hangor Day is a reminder of the courage, perseverance, and dedication of our submariners. Their legacy enriches the heritage of Pakistan’s submarine service and guides our ongoing maritime strategy,” Admiral Ashraf added.
Legacy of Courage and Inspiration
Hangor Day 2025 is not only a commemoration of past victories but also a celebration of the continuing strength of Pakistan Navy’s sub-surface capabilities. The day serves as an inspiration to new generations of naval officers and sailors, highlighting the importance of courage, strategic planning, and operational excellence.
Through Hangor’s story, Pakistan honors the sacrifices of its naval heroes and reinforces its commitment to national defense and maritime security.
