Federal Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said Gwadar Port has the potential to generate over $850 million each year. This income would come mainly from the value-added exports of fisheries and dates.
The minister shared these insights during a meeting focused on the operationalization of Gwadar Port. He noted that fisheries alone could contribute $645 million annually. Balochistan has a fish catch potential of 300,000 tons, but actual production is nearly half due to outdated fishing technology and low capacity. Regulatory hurdles also limit growth. Currently, 34 fish processing units operate in Balochistan, but most require modernization to meet export standards.
On the dates front, the minister said Panjgur and Turbat districts produce more than 225,000 tons annually. With proper value addition, this sector could generate $200 to $205 million through exports.
To support these industries, Gwadar Port will benefit from infrastructure upgrades and targeted policy support. These steps are necessary to attract investment and increase production capacity.
Additionally, the minister announced improvements in air connectivity. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plans to increase flights to Gwadar from one to three per week. There will be two weekly flights from Karachi and one from Islamabad. The government is also considering chartered flights for investors to facilitate easier access to the port.
These developments highlight the government’s commitment to making Gwadar Port a key hub for fisheries and dates exports. Modernizing facilities and improving connectivity will help unlock the port’s full potential.
Gwadar Port’s growing importance can boost Balochistan’s economy and create new jobs. The government aims to transform the port into a major center for regional trade and economic activity.
In summary, Gwadar Port is poised to become a significant revenue source through fisheries and date exports with the right investments and infrastructure upgrades.
