Gwadar Airport Officially Begins Operations with Successful Landing of First Flight

PIA’s First Commercial Flight Lands at New Gwadar International Airport

Gwadar – The first commercial flight of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) successfully landed at the new Gwadar International Airport on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the region’s aviation history.

Flight PK-503, carrying 46 passengers, departed from Karachi at 9:50 AM and landed at the newly inaugurated airport at 11:14 AM.

The airport was officially inaugurated by Federal Minister for Aviation Khawaja Asif, who also welcomed the first PIA commercial flight. This historic moment highlights Gwadar’s growing importance as a hub for trade and tourism.

Key Features of Gwadar International Airport

The Gwadar International Airport is Pakistan’s second greenfield airport, designed to accommodate large aircraft such as the Airbus A380. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to enhance connectivity and facilitate international and domestic flights, fostering economic growth in the region.

A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) issued earlier stated:

“Consequent upon operationalization of new Gwadar International Airport (OPGW) from January 20, 2025, the existing Gwadar International Airport (OPGD) will be closed for all scheduled/non-scheduled air traffic and all other facilities have been withdrawn.”

Aircraft and Capabilities

The airport supports a range of aircraft, including ATRs (Avions de Transport Régional), a product of the joint venture between Airbus and Leonardo. These aircraft are known for their efficiency in regional travel. Additionally, the facility’s infrastructure ensures compatibility with advanced aviation standards, promising an improved passenger and cargo experience.

The operationalization of Gwadar International Airport underscores Pakistan’s commitment to advancing its aviation infrastructure and boosting Gwadar’s strategic and economic significance.
