Govt Introduces Installment Plan For Mobile Phone Purchases

The interim government has announced a new policy named the ‘Contract-based Smartphones Policy,’ set to commence on January 15, 2024. This initiative aims to enhance smartphone accessibility by allowing individuals to purchase smartphones through installment plans. The policy is designed to cater to a wide range of users, including those traveling abroad who seek to acquire the latest smartphone models through convenient installment arrangements.

Dr. Umar Saif, the Federal Caretaker Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, unveiled the policy, highlighting that extensive discussions with telecom stakeholders have preceded its launch next month. The primary objective is to promote responsible financial behavior while ensuring increased accessibility to smartphones. Measures have been incorporated to protect investors from defaults, such as the potential blocking of mobile phones and national identity cards for defaulters.

Dr. Saif emphasized that the policy will empower telecom companies to directly offer smartphones to customers through installment plans. This move is particularly beneficial for low-income segments in Pakistan, fostering increased mobile broadband usage.

Addressing inquiries, the minister announced the implementation of ‘Standardized Quality Measurement Tests’ from January 7 to 10, 2024, across universities nationwide. This initiative aims to create job opportunities for fresh graduates. The Information Ministry, in collaboration with various educational bodies, has taken significant steps to revamp Information Technology education. Dr. Saif outlined plans for an Industry Placement Programme, offering job opportunities to 20,000 to 25,000 students after the tests. The emphasis is on tailored courses that align with industry needs, contributing to the enhancement of trained manpower.
