Finance Minister Chairs Meeting on Rightsizing of Federal Government
Federal Minister for Finance, Muhammad Aurangzeb, chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Rightsizing of the Federal Government to review and assess rightsizing initiatives across various government ministries.
Ministry of Railways’ Rightsizing Efforts
The Ministry of Railways presented a detailed overview of its rightsizing initiatives. The committee was informed that out of 95,859 sanctioned posts within the ministry, 17,101 posts had already been abolished, with an additional 5,695 posts in the process of elimination. Furthermore, the ministry plans to abolish 15,000 more posts as part of its continued rightsizing efforts.
The presentation emphasized the importance of modernizing Pakistan Railways to improve operational efficiency, reduce redundancy, and optimize resources. The ministry’s goal is to align its functions with its core mandate, ensuring the streamlined operation of its services.

Sub-Committee Referral for Further Review
The committee decided to refer the case to the Sub-Committee on Rightsizing for further review and the implementation of the proposed measures. This will ensure the proposed rightsizing strategies are carefully evaluated and executed effectively.
Progress Across Other Ministries
The Establishment Division updated the chair about confirmations from 29 ministries and one constitutional body regarding the abolition of 11,877 posts and 4,660 dying posts. The finance minister commended the progress made by the ministries and departments and acknowledged their efforts in implementing the committee’s decisions.
Ongoing Implementation of Rightsizing
The meeting concluded with a directive for the phased implementation of rightsizing measures across federal ministries. The goal is to achieve greater efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainable policy outcomes, aligning the government’s workforce with its evolving needs and objectives.
