Government Revises Initial Flood Damage Estimate To Rs 700 Billion

The Government of Pakistan has raised the estimated losses from recent floods to Rs700 billion. This update comes amid ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding the next $1.2 billion tranche of the loan program.

Officials told the IMF about the severe impact of floods across the country. The losses include damage to crops, infrastructure, livestock, and other key sectors. Punjab was the most affected province, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh also reported significant damage.

Earlier, the Government had estimated total flood-related losses at Rs360 billion. Authorities are still collecting detailed information from all provinces to finalize the complete assessment.

In addition to flood damage, the Government updated the IMF on the progress of national labour force and household surveys. The Pakistan Labour Force Survey, originally scheduled for December 2025, will now be published next week. This survey will provide critical data on unemployment, poverty, household income, and expenditure trends.

The Pakistan Social and Living Standards Survey results are also expected later this month. These surveys help the Government plan policies and relief programs based on accurate socioeconomic data.

Experts say the revised estimate highlights the significant economic impact of the floods and the urgent need for reconstruction. The Government has emphasized that these figures will guide resource allocation and disaster response efforts across affected regions.

The Government’s engagement with the IMF also ensures continued financial support. This step aims to strengthen recovery efforts while monitoring the country’s fiscal health during a challenging period for Pakistan’s economy.

By revising the flood damage estimate, the Government demonstrates its commitment to transparency and careful planning in managing natural disasters and their economic consequences.
