Government Proposes Reduction in Net Metering Rates During IMF Talks

During ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the government has proposed purchasing electricity from net metering users at a reduced rate of Rs10 per unit, a significant drop from the previous Rs27 per unit. This Rs17 reduction aims to address concerns raised by the IMF.

The IMF also questioned the government’s plan for off-grid consumers leaving the main power grid, though no clear response has been provided yet.

Negotiations have also touched on strategies for reducing circular debt, with the IMF suggesting the use of financial space to address the issue.

Net metering allows consumers generating their own electricity, often through solar panels, to sell excess power back to the grid, reducing their overall electricity bills and promoting renewable energy use.
