The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally appointed former opener Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Gambhir, renowned for leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL victory, will step into the role following Rahul Dravid’s tenure, which included India’s recent World Cup triumph.
According to Indian media reports, Gambhir’s annual salary from BCCI will range between INR 100 to 120 million. Reports suggest he will receive INR 10 million per month, aligning with the board’s commitment to compensating based on the coach’s experience and credentials.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah expressed confidence in Gambhir’s leadership, stating, “I welcome Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. I trust that under his leadership, the Indian team will achieve new heights.”
Gambhir, who amassed over 10,000 international runs across formats during his 13-year career, is noted for becoming the only Indian and one of four international cricketers to score centuries in five consecutive Test matches, alongside legends like Don Bradman and Jacques Kallis.
Shah highlighted Gambhir’s comprehensive understanding of modern-day cricket dynamics, having witnessed its rapid evolution firsthand. He emphasized Gambhir’s clear vision for Team India and his extensive experience as pivotal strengths for steering Indian cricket forward.
After retiring from active cricket, Gambhir ventured into commentary and later entered politics, serving as a lawmaker for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His diverse experiences and deep-rooted cricketing expertise position him uniquely for this high-profile coaching role, which is eagerly anticipated across the cricketing community in India and beyond.
