FIH Issues Formal Apology to Pakistan Over Flag Mistake

The management of the FIH Hockey Pro League has formally apologised to the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) after an incorrect version of Pakistan’s national flag was displayed during an international match against India. The incident occurred ahead of the highly anticipated contest in London and drew widespread criticism from hockey fans and social media users.

FIH Pro League Director Hillary Atkinson conveyed the apology in a written letter addressed to Pakistan Hockey Federation President Mohiuddin Ahmad Wani. In the letter, Atkinson expressed an unconditional apology and acknowledged the concerns raised by the error during the national anthems ceremony before the match.

The controversy emerged when the Pakistani flag displayed at the venue was missing the white stripe, an essential part of the country’s national flag. The mistake quickly attracted attention from supporters and officials, with many describing it as an unfortunate oversight during an international sporting event.

In its communication, the FIH administration recognised that a national flag is a powerful symbol of a country’s identity, pride, and recognition. The organisation stated that it understood the disappointment caused to the Pakistan team, its supporters, the people of Pakistan, and the national hockey federation due to the incident.

Atkinson accepted full responsibility for the mistake, describing it as an administrative error rather than an intentional act. She assured the Pakistan Hockey Federation that the matter would be thoroughly reviewed and that operational and management procedures would be reassessed to prevent similar incidents from occurring in future international competitions.

The FIH also reiterated its commitment to respecting the identity and dignity of all participating nations. The Pro League administration praised Pakistan’s contribution to the tournament and emphasised that professionalism, inclusivity, and respect for every team remain central values of the competition. The apology has been welcomed by many hockey followers, who hope the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of accuracy and respect during international sporting events.
