France has defended its decision to recognise a Palestinian state, despite growing criticism at home and abroad. The move comes after President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement on Thursday that France would formally support Palestinian statehood at a United Nations meeting in September.
The announcement marks a major step, as France is the most influential European country to support Palestinian recognition. The move triggered strong reactions internationally. Israel condemned the decision, saying it “rewards terror.” U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it “reckless” and accused France of aiding Hamas propaganda.
Hamas welcomed the statement, calling it “a positive step” toward justice for Palestinians. However, France rejected claims that its actions aligned with Hamas.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said France Palestine recognition was meant to support a two-state solution. He emphasized that Hamas opposes such a framework. “By recognising Palestine, France goes against that terrorist organisation,” Barrot stated.
Le Hamas a toujours refusé la solution à deux États. En reconnaissant la Palestine, la France donne tort à ce mouvement terroriste. Elle donne raison au camp de la paix contre celui de la guerre.

The decision also sparked political debate within France. Jordan Bardella, leader of the far-right National Rally, called the move “rushed” and said it gave Hamas unwanted legitimacy. Left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon praised the step as “a moral victory,” although he wanted it implemented immediately.
Some right-wing leaders questioned the timing and strategy. Xavier Bellamy, vice president of Les Republicains, said the recognition could be “counter-productive” or “pointless.” He argued that Macron’s earlier conditions, such as Hamas disarmament and recognition of Israel, had not been met.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau chose not to comment, saying he was focused on national security issues.
France is joining a growing list of nations taking this stance. In recent months, Norway, Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia have also recognised Palestinian statehood following the conflict in Gaza. Once France finalises the step, at least 142 countries will have formally recognised Palestine.
France defends move to recognise Palestinian state as part of a broader push to revive peace talks and support a two-state solution.
