GB Floods Homes Destroyed, Tourists Reported Missing

A cloudburst in Gilgit-Baltistan has triggered severe floods in the Diamer district, causing massive damage. Dozens of homes have been swept away, and key infrastructure has been destroyed. Several tourists have also gone missing after the floods struck the area.

According to the Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesperson, Faizullah Faraq, rescue teams and local residents acted quickly. They were able to save many tourists stranded near the Babusar Highway. However, the search continues for those still missing.

Rescue operations were delayed at first due to darkness. But as daylight returned, full-scale efforts resumed. Teams are now working around the clock to find the missing individuals.

The floods have destroyed a girls’ school, two hotels, a windmill, a wheat depot, a police post, and a tourist police shelter. Over 50 homes near the Babusar Highway were completely washed away.

In addition to homes and buildings, the floods have caused major damage to roads and bridges. An eight-kilometre stretch of the Babusar Highway has been badly hit. Blockages have been reported at 15 different spots, and four connecting bridges are gone.

The floodwaters also carried away large amounts of timber that were meant for construction use. Emergency work is underway to repair damaged roads and restore access.

Authorities are trying to move hundreds of stranded tourists to safety in Chilas city. The chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan has ordered all agencies to speed up rescue and relief work.

The Pakistan Army is leading the rescue operation. Officials say a helicopter will be deployed if needed to help those trapped in remote areas.

The full impact of the floods is still being assessed. However, the damage so far is extensive, and recovery may take time.
