At least five people have died after 18 members of the same family were swept away by sudden flash floods in the Swat River on Friday.

Reports indicate the family was having breakfast at a riverside hotel near Mingora Bypass when rising water levels—caused by heavy rainfall—engulfed the area, dragging them into the river.

Police confirmed that a rescue operation is underway, and five bodies have been retrieved so far.

In response, local authorities have issued a high alert and urged residents near the Swat River to evacuate to safer locations.

Just a day earlier, the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of the NDMA had released alerts warning of widespread monsoon rains and flood threats across several parts of Pakistan from June 26 to 28.

The advisory specifically cautioned that regions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa—including Swat, Chitral, Kohistan, Shangla, Abbottabad, Mansehra, and Battagram—may face moderate to heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides, especially in mountainous areas.
