Share

In a move to crack down on non-filers, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is set to roll out stringent measures, encompassing the blocking of mobile SIM cards and mobile phones, with plans to disconnect electricity for non-compliant individuals.

Blocking Mobile SIM Cards and Phones:

According to reliable sources, the FBR is initiating the first phase of its enforcement strategy by blocking mobile SIM cards and phones belonging to non-filers. The Income Tax General order, expected to be issued by January 15, will formalize this measure. The FBR aims to compel individuals to fulfill their tax obligations by employing this stringent approach.

Disconnecting Electricity for Non-Filers:

In addition to targeting mobile communication, the FBR is actively formulating a strategy to disconnect electricity connections for non-filers. However, challenges lie ahead as the FBR currently lacks comprehensive data on the electricity connections of individuals falling into the non-filer category. The board is exercising caution due to potential legal ramifications associated with cutting electricity connections.

Historic Revenue Collection:

It is noteworthy that the FBR recently achieved a historic milestone by collecting an unprecedented Rs. 1,021 billion in a single month, specifically in December 2023. This remarkable feat signifies a substantial increase in revenue collection and showcases the effectiveness of the FBR’s efforts to bolster financial resources.

Surpassing Targets:

An official statement released by the FBR highlights not only the groundbreaking achievement in December but also the surpassing of targets for both the month and the first six months of the current financial year. This success underscores the board’s commitment to meeting and exceeding revenue goals, further emphasizing the need for strict measures to ensure tax compliance.

As the FBR takes decisive steps against non-filers, the landscape of tax enforcement in Pakistan undergoes a significant transformation. The board’s focus on both mobile communication and electricity connections signals a comprehensive effort to encourage tax compliance and enhance revenue generation. The coming months will reveal the impact of these measures on tax collection and financial discipline in the country.
