Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Chief Fazlur Rehman has rejected the 27th Constitutional Amendment, calling it a regressive step that undermines democratic principles. He shared his views at a press conference in Islamabad.
Fazlur Rehman said, “We completely reject the 27th Constitutional Amendment as the decision has been unanimously endorsed by our Shura (council).” He stressed that the amendment bypassed proper parliamentary procedures and disregarded democratic norms.
He compared the 27th Amendment with the 26th, which was passed after detailed negotiations with the government. “The 26th Amendment had support from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). We considered their proposals carefully and implemented them, achieving consensus,” he explained.
Criticizing the current government, Fazlur Rehman alleged that members were coerced, and a forced, fabricated two-thirds majority was claimed, violating democratic principles. He said the opposition was not consulted, which is a fundamental responsibility of the government.
He also expressed concerns over the role of the judiciary, noting, “We were principled supporters of the constitutional court, but actions were taken against parliamentary and democratic values.”
Fazlur Rehman questioned the pardon extended to the president, calling it inconsistent with democratic norms. He emphasized that such decisions should align with the constitution and democratic practices.
The JUI-F chief highlighted that constitutional amendments should be passed with proper debate, transparency, and consensus among all political parties. He warned that ignoring democratic processes could weaken public trust in governance and legal frameworks.
