Fake News Creators Face Arrests and Account Bans in Massive Government Crackdown

The Government of Pakistan has launched a sweeping crackdown on fake news and disinformation networks following recent religious protests. Authorities have identified multiple groups spreading false content and compiled a list of key individuals involved.

Officials confirmed that cases will be filed under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), with the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency (NCCIA) ordered to make immediate arrests. A newly activated Deep Fake Lab will analyze fabricated videos and audio clips, while social media platforms have been instructed to remove false or harmful content within 24 hours or risk permanent account suspensions.

Citizens have been cautioned against sharing unverified information, as the government enforces a zero-tolerance policy toward content inciting hatred or targeting state institutions. Investigations are also extending abroad to identify foreign networks behind online propaganda, with possible Red Notices and diplomatic action under consideration.

Television channels, vloggers, and influencers have been directed to double-check news before publication, and operations have begun against troll networks and misleading hashtags. Authorities are monitoring suspicious financial activity linked to disinformation campaigns, and penalties may be increased during emergencies.

Provincial focal persons have been appointed for swift response and counter-messaging, while the public is encouraged to report fake news via the 1919 helpline with full confidentiality.
