A no-confidence motion against Azad Kashmir PM Chaudhry Anwar-ul-Haq succeeded on Monday, paving the way for Faisal Mumtaz Rathore to become the region’s new Prime Minister.
During a session chaired by Speaker Chaudhry Latif Akbar, the Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of the motion. Rathore secured 36 votes, while only two votes came against him—well above the required 27 for a simple majority. He is set to become AJK’s 16th Prime Minister, with his oath-taking expected on Tuesday.
The motion was submitted by Sardar Javed Ayub, Chaudhry Qasim Majeed, and others, who proposed Rathore as the new leader of the House. Notably, former PM Anwar-ul-Haq, elected in April 2023 with 48 votes, chose to contest the motion rather than resign.
This makes Rathore the fourth Prime Minister of the current Assembly. Strict security was in place across Muzaffarabad during the vote, and PPP’s senior leadership is expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
The incoming government now faces key political tests: fulfilling commitments made with the Action Committee, addressing PML-N’s call for early elections, and managing the challenge of keeping the cabinet limited to 20 ministers.
