Former Chief Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja has submitted a contempt of court petition against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, accusing him of failing to comply with a Supreme Court directive related to military court convictions.
The petition, filed through Advocate Khawaja Ahmad Hussain, points out that the Supreme Court had issued a ruling on May 7, requiring the government to pass legislation within 45 days to allow individuals convicted by military courts the right to appeal. The court’s order was intended to uphold the fundamental right to a fair trial and judicial review.
However, the petition claims that the federal government has not fulfilled this legal obligation within the given timeframe. It argues that the deliberate delay in implementing the court’s ruling amounts to defiance of judicial authority and warrants contempt proceedings against the Prime Minister.
The former Chief Justice has urged the apex court to take action to uphold its verdict and ensure accountability for non-compliance. The case reflects growing legal and constitutional concerns surrounding the functioning and oversight of military courts in Pakistan.
