Ex‑Captain Questions Shadab Khan’s Return to Pakistan Squad

A former Pakistan cricket captain has publicly questioned the recent recall of all‑rounder Shadab Khan to the national Twenty20 side, saying that the selection deserves more transparency and merit‑based justification. The debate comes amid the announcement of Pakistan’s T20 squad for the upcoming three‑match series in Sri Lanka, where Shadab has been included after recovering from a shoulder injury.

Shadab’s return has become a topic of discussion in cricket circles, with critics pointing out that young domestic performers like Maaz Sadaqat and Sufyan Muqeem were overlooked despite strong recent performances, while the experienced Shadab was selected. Former captain Rashid Latif highlighted this point on social media, raising questions about whether opportunities are being fairly given to emerging talent.

The controversy adds to earlier criticism from another former Pakistan captain, Shahid Afridi, who previously questioned Shadab’s earlier return to the T20 squad and his appointment as vice‑captain during the New Zealand tour. Afridi asked what recent performances in domestic or international cricket justified the recall, and lamented that inconsistent selection decisions have left Pakistan cricket “in ICU” due to flawed decision‑making.

Shadab Khan, aged 27, had been sidelined for much of the year due to a shoulder injury that required surgery in Britain. After successfully regaining full fitness, he impressed in Australia’s Big Bash League and was consequently added to the national squad alongside other players focusing on the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Supporters of Shadab argue that his experience as an all‑rounder and prior leadership roles in franchise cricket make him a valuable asset for Pakistan’s T20 side. They also note that rotation and managing player workloads are key factors in modern international cricket. However, critics continue to urge selectors to give preference to sustained domestic performance and transparent criteria in team selection.

The selection debate reflects broader discussions within Pakistan cricket about nurturing young talent, maintaining consistent policies, and balancing experience with merit. As Pakistan prepares for important international fixtures ahead, the controversy over Shadab Khan’s recall is likely to remain part of public discourse among fans, former players, and cricket analysts.
