Euro 2024 final: Spain wins a record fourth time, defeating England 2-1

Spain has clinched its fourth European Championship title, setting a new record, by defeating England 2-1 in a thrilling Euro 2024 final in Berlin. The match saw dramatic moments and exceptional performances from both teams, but Spain ultimately emerged victorious. The game began with Spain controlling possession but failing to create clear chances. England took the lead just before halftime with a goal from Phil Foden, but Spain equalized early in the second half through Nico Williams, who scored off a pass from 17-year-old Lamine Yamal.

England responded midway through the second half with a stunning goal from Cole Palmer. However, with just under five minutes remaining in regular time, Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal for Spain, converting a perfect pass from Marc Cucurella. The victory marks Spain’s fourth European Championship title, adding to their previous wins in 1964, 2008, and 2012. England, on the other hand, faced another disappointment after losing the Euro 2020 final to Italy in a penalty shootout.

Key moments in the match included the forced substitution of Spain’s midfielder Rodri due to injury, replaced by Martin Zubimendi, and England’s bold decision to substitute captain Harry Kane with Ollie Watkins, which momentarily invigorated their attack. Spain’s young talents shone brightly, with Nico Williams becoming the second youngest player to score in a European Championship final and Lamine Yamal being named the youngest player of the tournament. Rodri was awarded Euro 2024’s Player of the Tournament.

The match concluded with dramatic attempts by England to equalize, including a header from Declan Rice and a shot from Marc Guehi, both saved by Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simón. The final whistle triggered jubilant celebrations among Spanish players and fans. In response to the match, King Charles III expressed his support for the English players, commending their achievement in reaching the final and encouraging them to hold their heads high despite the loss.
