Emraan Hashmi Calls Himself A ‘Liberal Muslim’ Amid ‘Haq’ Row

Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi has spoken out amid controversy surrounding his upcoming legal drama Haq. The film’s trailer recently sparked backlash, with some viewers claiming that it targets or misrepresents the Muslim community.

In an interview with ANI, Emraan Hashmi clarified that the film does not malign any religion or group. He explained that while reading the script, he was aware of the sensitivities related to his community and approached the story with care.

“I read the script from an actor’s perspective but also understood the responsibility toward my community,” Hashmi said. “This film presents a balanced view. It doesn’t point fingers or pass judgment on any community.”

The actor emphasized that he personally saw no issue with the movie’s message. “As a liberal Muslim, I can say I had no problem with the film’s viewpoint. If it disrespected any faith, I would not have done it,” Emraan Hashmi stated.

He also spoke about his secular family values. “I married Parveen, who is a Hindu. In my family, my children take part in both puja and namaaz. This reflects the upbringing I had,” he added.

Hashmi further noted that every viewer interprets films differently, based on their beliefs, background, and experiences. He encouraged audiences to watch Haq with an open mind, stressing that its intent is not to divide but to start meaningful dialogue.

Directed by Subhash Kapoor, Haq stars Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam in lead roles. The movie is inspired by the landmark Shah Bano Case, which influenced reforms related to divorce rights for Muslim women in India.
