Elon Musk’s xAI startup has introduced Grok, a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other generative AI chatbots. Musk claims Grok is superior in some aspects and excels in academic tests, including math and coding, outperforming GPT 3.5. Grok operates on real-time data from X and utilizes the Grok-1 engine.

xAI reports that Grok surpassed other models in its category, including ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1, in standard machine-learning benchmarks for math and reasoning abilities. It was only outdone by models with more extensive training data and computational resources, like GPT-4.

Grok, Claude-2, and GPT-4 were also evaluated in the 2023 Hungarian national high school math finals. Grok and Claude-2 received a C grade with scores of 59% and 55%, while GPT-4 achieved a B grade with a 68% score.

Musk mentioned that Grok is designed to respond with humor and sarcasm and can tackle provocative questions that other AI systems avoid. Grok is in an early beta stage but is rapidly improving, with additional safety measures in development to prevent malicious use.

Currently, Grok is accessible to a limited number of US users as part of the X Premium Plus subscription for $16 per month.
