Elected Members Sworn In Amid Protests, Rigging Allegations

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]The inaugural session of the sixteenth National Assembly commenced with a one-hour delay at the Parliament House in Islamabad. Amidst disorder and commotion, the newly elected members of the national legislature took their oaths.

President Arif Alvi, belatedly summoning the inaugural session late last night, marked the official swearing-in of the members, which occurred 20 days after the general elections. However, the delay was not without controversy, as Dr. Alvi had initially opposed the summary from the caretaker administration to schedule the session for the oath-taking on February 29. His objection was based on the fact that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had not yet allocated all the reserved seats in the house, rendering it incomplete.

The session was called hours before the scheduled meeting for the oath-taking of the newly-elected Members of the National Assembly of Pakistan.

In terms of seating arrangements, Nawaz Sharif, his brother Shehbaz Sharif (the party nominee for the new Prime Minister), former President Asif Ali Zardari, Abdul Aleem Khan, and Raja Pervaiz Ashraf have been assigned seats on the front row of government benches.

On the opposition benches, Omar Ayub Khan, former Speaker Asad Qaiser, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and Mahmood Khan Achakzai are seated in the front row.

The atmosphere surrounding the swearing-in was marked by chaos and disorder, reflecting the complex dynamics and challenges faced by the newly formed National Assembly.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
