ISLAMABAD: The Electoral Commission of Pakistan (ECP) offered President Dr. Arif Alvi potential election dates on Friday, and he announced April 30 as the day for holding elections in Punjab.

After taking into account the dates suggested by the ECP, the president announced the date. The Punjab Provincial Assembly general elections were proposed to be held between April 30 and May 7, 2023, and the electoral body also recommended that they be held ideally on a Sunday.

By sending separate letters to the president Dr. Arif Alvi and the governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Haji Ghulam Ali asking them to choose dates for elections in the provinces in accordance with a recent Supreme Court order, the ECP earlier formally started the process of holding elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Within a few days after the supreme court attempted to resolve the election problem, the national election board acted, ordering the president and governor KP to set dates for provincial legislatures’ elections after consulting with ECP.

The ECP advised in a letter to President Alvi that the president select a date for the elections between April 30 and May 7, 2023, immediately following Eid, stating that the commission would be prepared to carry out its statutory and legal obligations when the election date was set.

According to an official statement from the ECP, it has written to the president in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, which suggests holding elections in Punjab province between April 30 and May 7, 2023. The letter stated that the “Election Commission is ready to undertake its constitutional and legal tasks after the President selects a date.”
