ECP Requests Military Presence For Election Security

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]On Monday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) formally asked the federal government to deploy the Pakistan Army and civil armed forces’ personnel at polling stations for the upcoming general elections scheduled on February 8.

The request, communicated through a letter to Federal Interior Secretary Aftab Akbar Durrani, cited Article 220 of the Constitution, emphasizing the executive authorities’ obligation to assist the ECP in carrying out its duties. ECP Secretary Omar Hamid Khan, in the letter, revealed a significant deficit of 267,558 security personnel needed for the smooth conduct of the general elections.

The letter also detailed the current police strength compared to the required deployment, with provinces like Punjab and Sindh facing notable shortfalls in security personnel.
