Easypaisa Issues Statement After Telenor's Sale to PTCL

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]Following the sale of Telenor Pakistan to PTCL, digital financial services provider Easypaisa has issued a statement to address concerns.

Easypaisa reassures its customers that the sale of Telenor Pakistan will not affect its operations as it is not part of the transaction.

In response to the news about Telenor Pakistan’s sale, Easypaisa emphasized that Telenor Microfinance Bank (TMB) and its flagship platform, Easypaisa, remain independent of the transaction.

The statement, shared on Twitter, assures customers that their deposits are secure, and the development will not impact them.

Easypaisa highlighted its status as an independent financial institution, licensed and governed by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). It operates as a joint venture between Telenor B.V. and Ant Group, both committed shareholders dedicated to transforming the bank from a Microfinance Bank to a Digital Retail Bank, subject to regulatory approvals.

The statement urges customers to dismiss any unsubstantiated rumors and emphasizes the commitment to maintaining high standards of service and security. Easypaisa reassures customers that operations will continue seamlessly, remaining focused on the mission of achieving financial inclusion in a digital Pakistan.

This clarification comes in response to recent rumors on social media and scam messages suggesting uncertainty about Easypaisa’s financial health post-sale of Telenor Pakistan.

Similar misleading messages were circulated earlier regarding U Microfinance Bank (UBank), which UBank dismissed as inaccurate, reporting a strong capital basis in its subsequent half-yearly reports.

It is suggested that the repeat of such messages targeting Easypaisa/Telenor Bank may originate from a single source with motives that may include competition or a distressed market player. In the broader context, last week, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) announced the acquisition of 100 percent of Telenor Pakistan, a move that will result in the largest cellular operator in Pakistan, surpassing Jazz’s longstanding leadership position in the cellular market.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
