PM Shehbaz Sharif Unveils E-Bikes on Easy Installments for Employees

Shehbaz Sharif has announced a new initiative to provide E-Bikes to government employees up to BPS-16 through affordable installment plans, as part of a broader strategy to promote electric mobility across Pakistan.

The proposal was introduced during a high-level meeting in Islamabad aimed at accelerating the country’s transition toward electric vehicles. The E-Bikes scheme is designed to offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly commuting option for public sector workers while supporting national sustainability goals.

Officials informed the meeting that the government is working toward converting 30% of all vehicles in Pakistan to electric power within the next five years. This shift is expected to significantly cut reliance on imported fuel and could generate savings of around $4.5 billion.

The prime minister directed relevant departments to speed up efforts to expand EV adoption, particularly focusing on the swift rollout of the E-Bikes programme. He emphasized that adopting electric transport is essential in light of rising energy demands and changing regional dynamics, as it can reduce import costs, improve energy security, and protect the environment.

He also highlighted the importance of ensuring transparency in subsidy distribution under the National Electric Vehicle Policy, instructing authorities to implement the E-Bikes initiative efficiently.

Officials further shared that progress in the EV sector is underway, with 72 manufacturing licenses already issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, and four for electric cars. Additionally, 123 applications have been submitted for setting up EV charging stations nationwide.

The introduction of E-Bikes is seen as a key step toward modernizing transport, reducing fuel dependency, and making eco-friendly travel more accessible for government employees.
